Acoustic Sanctuary

Acoustic Sanctuary

University of Westminster Stand: TB2

In modern society, people often exhibit vibrant personas online but struggle with self-expression in real-world interactions. This model is designed to offer a sanctuary for those with social anxiety. The dome shape helps to envelop sound, creating a homely atmosphere. The shell below, made of cartridge paper, serves as the entrance to this private space, with a design that produces an electronic, mechanical sound, symbolising the connection to the outside world. This entrance highlights the transition from unfamiliarity to familiarity.

The three-layered materials used in the model each represent different emotional states: the outer plywood layer symbolises the hard exterior that seeks to be heard, the middle gum foam layer represents the soft, inner desire to be understood, and the innermost crepe paper signifies the inner struggle between fear and the desire to step forward. This space aims not only to provide refuge but also to catalyse personal growth and development.
